In the Closet

On Thursday, January 10, Boston Public Schools held a containment drill – an emergency preparedness practice. I’m not sure if BPS held such a drill before Newtown. I’m glad they did it. The day before the drill we received a voicemail from the school principal informing us of this event as depending on age kids will get stressed, scared, and have questions.

Liron is three and a half so she’s not aware of what’s really going on here, but as someone who thrives on routine I told her the school would have a drill to prepare for an emergency. She thinks “emergency” is a fun thing, as “let’s hit the elevator emergency button and talk to the operator on call!!!”

Friday morning on the drive to school I remembered to ask her about the drill.

Me: Liron, did you have that emergency practice yesterday at school?
Liron: Yes mama, I sat in the closet quietly

Me: Were you with your friends?
Liron: Yes, I sat with friends. And then we each got a sticker
